Fat Tuesday

Today is the last day of Mardi Gras, typically marked by a finale of excess before the starting of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Traditionally, some habit or object is given up or abstained from during the Lenten period (40 days). While this can range from fast food- to cancer causing cigarettes to anything in between, it usually focuses on something that may be unhealthy in some way shape or form. To that end, Svenn thought it might be fun to give up one of his WoW habits for Lent… no, not give up WoW or the blog- he doesn’t have that kind of commitment, though maybe he should.

Anyways, a few of the ideas he had were to:

1. Give up doing Dailies- as I am terrible at doing them anyways (still haven’t finished the Argent Tourny on a single toon), that seemed kind of hollow.

2. Give up grinding Frost Badges- again, I am terrible at getting the “daily” random done on more than 1 of my 6 80s on any given night, so still pretty hollow.

3. Give up leveling the 4 remaining Svenn Alts- I have been enjoying running low level randoms with Grayce so, while tempting, I don’t want to pass up the opportunity to continue that.

4. Give up Raid Leader/ Class Lead responsibilities- Uh, yeah I guess- but I talk too much so no one makes Svenn the RL anyways, and class lead is a nebulous concept in FIST and as such won’t really be missed :)

5. Give up sneaking in a quick log-on while the kiddos are watching their movie before bad time- I usually get on while they are otherwise occupied to take care of banking chores, daily transmutes, etc. I made a commitment not to “play” while they are awake, yet somehow justify this pre-bed log-in (as if I don’t get as caught up in posting on the AH and watching my total gold count rise as I do tanking a quick heroic or 2….or 3) as harmless.

6. Stop playing before Midnight!- I usually get up between 4:45-5:15ish (AM) to get to the gym (I’m on my own PT program in my current assignment, yay for no formations for awhile!), so staying up past midnight hurts my motivation the next morning.

7. Give up Tanking- This is really tempting. I have been feeling pretty burnt out on tanking for awhile. Svenn tanks every serious raid, Knutsen (the drood) tanks daily/ weekly runs, Cromm had a side project lock tanking heroics for awhile (people don’t seem to have the patience for that anymore), the DK tanks PuGs to collect some gear on occasion, even the Hunter was lvled as an experiment in reaching the defense cap while wearing mail (more on that in a later post).

With 1, 2, 3, and 4 out, and #7 landing in the “hurting the guild more than it would benefit Svenn” category, I think I will focus on 5 and 6. Sorry AH chores, you’ll have to wait until the weekend when the rest of my housekeeping gets done. And, it can’t be that hard to /wave goodnight before the clock rolls over to a new day, can it? CAN IT!?!?

Anyways, those are Svenn’s ideas for Lent, are you giving up anything?

I think I'll try to give up looking at wow related stuff at work. That would really take commitment!

I like #5. Some help cleaning up after dinner and what's it would be nice. ;)

@ Angelya: That is a hard one...my blog roll is getting longer all the time, how will I ever keep up!? :)

@ Beth/Grayce: If we switched to paper plates and plastic forks and knives we wouldn't have these problems ;P

I've been thinking about just reducing my playing hours overall, so I suppose that's what I'll be doing personally, but it isn't really related to Lent in my case. :)

The daily frost emblem grind gets pretty old fast. I can do it on about one character per day, too, without asking myself, "Exactly why are you doing this?"

I think the things you're thinking of focusing on sound like good ones!

"Give up sneaking in a quick log-on while the kiddos are watching their movie before bad time-"

I know it was a typo, but I swear that before my kids go to bed is "bad-time". Everything that we've put away, cleaned up, etc can fall apart in the precious few minutes before bed time. I will partake in this and give up playing before bad-time for a while to see how I like it.

@ Vid: I should probably follow suit on that one as well, but there precious little else to do in Alaska in the winter (I lack the requisite body-fat for most of the outdoor winter activities:)

@ Inno: Ack! "bad time" I am so going to fire my proof reader, my editor, and my publicist...wait, isn't that you, you, and you?

Truth be told, that is the time my kids get a little crazy. They know whats coming and make a desperate last minute bid to expend all energy in an effort to prove that they really aren't tired. It never works, but you can't really fault them for trying :)
